I knew the raptors had secured the 4th pick in the 2003 NBA Draft. However I was unsure of who would have been selected. It was an important pick in the Raptor’s franchise history, solely based on the fact that this draft was expected to be filled with franchise players. The raptors were coming off of a disastrous 24-58 season and were led by a coach who was not traveling down the 401 or the DVP but the road to unemployment due to their record. A combination of so many things were going wrong for the Toronto Raptors at the time and the 4th pick provided a sense of optimism, a sense of hope. “With the 4th pick in the 2003 draft. The Toronto Raptors select Chris Bosh from the University of Georgia Tech,” said Commissioner David Stern. My initial reaction was complete shock. I had never heard of Chris Bosh and he definitely was not the marquee player that I was expecting to be drafted. Now drive it.” With Bryan Colangelo at the helm, he is at the top of my list as the main contributor who can be held solely responsible if Chris Bosh stays or bolts. In his first season, he acquired many integral pieces which include, T.J Ford, Jorge Garbajosa, and Anthony Parker. We also witnessed the emergence of Jose Calderon and then rookie, Andrea Bargnani. With all these moves early in Colangelo’s tenure, not only did it demonstrate a commitment to Bosh but it resulted in an Atlantic Division title and created a winning culture which is always encouraging for a young star. Last season, Bryan Colangelo made a bold move by trading away T.J Ford and others for Jermaine O’neal. My initial reaction was based on the fact that this is the type of move to deliver yet another message to Bosh that the Raptors are committed to not only building a winner, but building a winner around him. Although the move did not pan out as expected with the Raptors finishing with a 33-49 Record and finishing 13th in their respective conference, it showed Bosh that Colangelo is not afraid to take a risk, even though it may result in a failure. I could sit here and talk about how Toronto needs him because of the charity work he has done; donating 1 million dollars to a Toronto charity or setting up his foundation to help set up after school programs for kids around the city. But the truth is that Chris Bosh would do these things for any other city he played for without seeking much recognition - it speaks to who he is. The bigger truth, and Chris probably won't realize this until later in his career, is that in many ways Chris Bosh needs Toronto as much as Toronto needs him. Bosh/Barg is probably the most dynamic duo in the league, with their offense skills that are almost unstoppable. With increasing numbers by the year, all star game nods, gold medals, praises amongest his peers and fans, and the on going relationship he has with his fans via social networking we could not ask for a better basketball player. Not only to play for us but also represent us as a brand and ambassdor for this sport in our wonderful country. With fans and cities creating websites, banners and petitions pleading for their superstars to stay with their clubs with the coveted free agency class of 2010 looming. Mr. Colangelo has done as much as he can. …He has teammates who are growing individually and as a team
…He has a coaching staff that is always pushing him to be his best (you wouldnt think a guy who is already putting up 22 – 10 would improve again but give credit to the coaching staff who have clearly showed bosh some tape and he is starting to pass a LOT better the last few games)
