Same Faces, New Places (Or not…) – 2010 Edition

July 1st is like Christmas for NBA fans. They countdown to midnight to see what presents their team is going to get them (only to have to wait to enjoy them — NBA moratorium period). This wasn’t just any July 1st though, some of the best players in the game became free agents and the floodgates have opened. With Lebron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh holding meetings with their suitors, other teams made moves to secure tier 2 free agents. The usual fan groans were heard across the blogosphere but at the end of the day… the money has to go somewhere.

INKED

Joe Johnson – Atlanta Hawks*
6 years @ $119 Million (not fully confirmed)
One of the marquee free agents of the summer, the Hawks wasted no time handing out a max contract to a payer who hugely underperformed during this years playoffs. Johnson has helped the team become relevant but after two years of disappointing endings, it’s come as a bit of a surprise that the Hawks didn’t think twice about the massive contract. There is a moratorium period to go through but all signs point to Joe returning as a Hawk — this time under a new coach.

Rudy Gay – Memphis Grizzlies
5 years @ $81.6 Million
That’s a lot of cash for a guy who has yet to live up to the billing. A restricted free agent, Rudy Gay was scheduled to meet with other teams but the Grizzlies didn’t want to wait and see how things played out. On day 1 of free agency they jumped the gun and offered him a max deal and that grin on his face got just a little bigger. Every year we see teams overpaying to keep their own guys but its strange the Grizz didn’t wait to let the market determine his worth.

Drew Gooden – Milwauke Bucks
5 years @ $32 Million
This is the longest contract of his career — I kid you not! Gooden has been a journeyman but never really played like one. He seems to fit with whichever team he is playing for but they never seem to want him back when they get the chance. This will be his 8th team and he should be able to provide some scoring for the Bucks on the front line who were extremely light at that spot beyond Bogut who should be healed after a horrible injury.

John Salmons – Miwaukee Bucks
5 years @ $39 Million
Salmons opted out of the final year of his contract only to ink a longer one with the same team. Brought over in a trade late in the season, he produced for the Bucks offensively and provided a veteran presence for the young team during the playoffs. The Bucks have been feeling generous over the last month by adding Corey Maggette and Chris Douglas Roberts to the mix. It is yet to be seen if there is enough ball to go around.

Amir Johnson – Toronto Raptors
5 years @ $34 Million
A member of the youth movement — dubbed the Young Guns, Amir flourished in Toronto last season. He is getting paid starter money but its going to be a challenge to get him to stay on the floor for starter minutes. The foul prone forward showed a lot of promise and will have some big shoes to fill with the eminent departure of Chris Bosh. He played well with Jose Calderon at point and fits well with what the team is trying to do. (More in a separate post)

Channing Frye – Phoenix Suns
5 years @ $30 Million
He scoffed at the original 5 yrs, $25 million contract offered by the Suns but it didn’t take them long to up the ante and get him locked up long term. Frye fit well in the Suns uptempo, drive and kick system. He became one of the more efficient 3 point shooters in the league playing beside one of the best to dish it. His role will expand with the departure of Amare but this is a good signing for a young guy who has room to grow.

Hakim Warrick – Phoenix Suns
4 years @ $18 Million
Damn those Suns are quicker off the court than they are on. Just hours after talks broke down with Amare Stodemire, the Suns reached out to forward Hakim Warrick and inked him to a 4 year deal. This essentially confirms the end of the Amare era in Phoenix and a fresh start with some younger faces. Warrick, a winner at the college level, has yet to find the right team to build his game with but if history is any indicator — Nash can make anyone look great.

Paul Pierce – Boston Celtics
4 years @ $61Million
Richard Jefferson opted out of the final year of his contract — kinda crazy. Paul Pierce not so much. Pierce was due to earn $21million in the final year of his contract and this new deal allows the team to take a lesser hit next year. His loyalty to the Celtics was evident when he signed his previous deal. He has won the coveted ring and went to the finals again this year. The window is slowly closing on the aging Celtics but their Captain looks to want to finish his career here.

Darko Milicic – Minnesota Timberwolves
4 years @ $20 Million
One word — KAHHHHN. Seriously how is this man still earning an NBA paycheck. One of the biggest busts was just given some job security by one of the most bizzare GM’s in the biz (advised by none other than Rob Babcock). This signing further implies that the Wolves are looking to move Al Jefferson who has dealt with some injuries. Darko has yet to do anything in his NBA career and I would advise against holding your breath for such occurrence to take place.

Nikola Pekovic- Minnesota Timbewolves
3 years @ $13 Million
Nikola was the first player to be signed as free agency opened and another bizzare move by Davd Kahn. The Wolves signed the 6`11 center, who was the teams’ second round pick in 2008 to a 3 year, $13 million contract. Projected to go higher in 2008, his value dropped due to contract issues. Issues no more though as he was given the most lucrative deal ever signed by a 2nd round pick. Again — KAHHHHN!!

Raptors Media Day – Let the games begin…

(AP Photo/The Canadian Press, Frank Gunn)

The match up series will return to its regularly scheduled programming after this update on Media Day mayhem. The 9 new faces on the Raptors roster assured that a generally routine day would be full of optimism, quotes and a few jokes. I didn’t have the opportunity to attend (which I hope changes in the future), but wanted to bring you some news from the ACC. Since Holly (@stackmack from The Score) and Franchise (@RaptorsHQ from Raptors HQ) were both in attendance, I shot off some quick questions and they were kind enough to answer with their observations.

Question: First thing’s first… Did either of you get to try out any of the new eats at the ACC?

(@RaptorsHQ) – I didn’t try any of the eats but one of my co-writers who was there did. He had some of the doughnut things and one of the pizza pizza dogs. He said they were delicious ha ha!

(@stackmack) – Seeing how I’ve yet to eat in the media room during all of last season, I chose to pass on the food. Eating and working just don’t seem to mix for me, but everyone looked like they were enjoying themselves. Put me that close to the game and I’m focused on one thing only. Once I finally get home on game nights around 11:30 I’m famished!

Question: Which scrum was harder to get through, Andrea Bargnani or Hedo Turkoglu?

(@RaptorsHQ) – HEDOOOOOOOO…by a long shot. After 12 seconds I saw Sonny Weems walking solo so went to talk to him. Not just painfully slow, but guys like Hedo and Bosh EVERYONE talks to so you don’t really get anything new and interesting. Plus Andrea gets better with each season. This year he was even cracking a few jokes as opposed to two years ago when it was one word answers.

(@stackmack) – Andrea actually makes me laugh with some of his answers. You kind of get the feeling that he’s looking at us media types like, “Really? I just want to play basketball, please leave me alone”, so sometimes you get these answers that are half deadpan, half serious and they just crack me up. As I said in my media day round up, I will not be going to Mr. Turkoglu if I’m writing on deadline!

Question: Both of you had a chance to see DeMar in Vegas. All the talk as of late has been about him adding some bulk. How much of a change did you see?

(@RaptorsHQ) – Definitely looked like DeMar bulked up. Slam ran a post today about the magic “15 pounds bulk-up” and I’d say that was about right.

(@stackmack) – While the talk was largely on the weight that Bosh has gained, it was clear DeMar was not joking when he tweeted all summer about the long hours of training he had put in. He’s got some shoulder definition that simply wasn’t there before. Besides summer league, thinking back to his first pre-draft workout here in Toronto, he’s gained a lot of size and upper body strength since then. Great to see a young guy come in fit and ready to continue working. Speaking of the team as a whole, everyone looked ready to go.

Question: Bryan Colangelo sounded very excited when speaking about the upcoming season. What were some of the things that stood out for you when he addressed the media yesterday?

(@RaptorsHQ) – I could listen to the Legomaster all day. He just has a way with words and whether you agree with all of his moves or not, he does a great job of giving insight into things. I posted a 20 minute piece of the scrum with him yesterday on the site and I wish I had gotten the very beginning, just a fascinating listen. Anyways, for me, 3 main things stood out:

  • His level of respect for Jay Triano. BC was quoted as saying “I feel better about this training camp and the start and the preparation that’s gone on then I have in a long time…and I’ve been doing this for 14 previous seasons.” I think that speaks volumes about the coaching staff and unfortunately, Sam Mitchell.
  • The magic number 50. BC feels this team has the ability to win 50 games, and probably needs to do that to meet the expectations he’s set out, that is to say a second round playoff birth. That’s not to say that Colangelo thinks this team WILL win 50, but that’s the number it probably will take to get a fourth or fifth seed, and therefore a good shot at the second round thus avoiding the Clevelands, Bostons, and Orlandos.
  • How excited he is about seeing what this team can do. He admitted that his offseason moves probably aren’t going to solve every issue, but he does feel that he and his staff addressed a great number of last year’s problems and therefore he’s extremely excited about the potential of this new group of players.

(@stackmack) – That the team is a team. Jay may be a first year coach, but he is not alone in this. The team was “built” by Bryan and Jay together. How impressed Bryan is with the work ethic and preparation of the coaching staff as a whole this season. With nine new faces on the roster and two new assistant coaches in Marc Iavaroni and Alvin Williams, it’s really refreshing to hear that the staff is working just as hard as the players to turn over a new leaf this season.

Question: Bosh and Turkoglu will sit out the first part of camp. How much do you think this affects the timeline for the team to gel?

(@RaptorsHQ) – With the timelines we were given in regards to Bosh and Hedo, I don’t think this is that big of a deal. The off-court bonding is already taking place so while Bosh (and especially Hedo I think) might be a step slow to start, there’s still essentially a month to go before opening night so hopefully there will be lots of time to gel on-court. And in any event, I think it’s going to take a month or two of regular season before the real gelling happens anyways. It’s during that time that I hope everyone stays healthy.

(@stackmack) – It sounds like Chris is sitting out as a precaution after the team saw the trouble Jose Calderon had with the hamstring acting up throughout the season as a result of his coming back too soon. No need to rush either Chris or Hedo back, if it could risk or compromise their health later on down the road. Of course, in an ideal world you have your entire roster together, but life doesn’t work like that, so you roll with it and be thankful that your star player put in a hard summer of work in prep for a big season and that your biggest offseason acquisition will get to bond with him on the sidelines during training camp.

Question: Player surprisingly bigger than you remembered?

(@RaptorsHQ) – Amir Johnson. He talked to me about bulking up in the offseason and he definitely looks bigger than he did in Detroit.

(@stackmack) – DeMar is the guy I’ve got to go with for this for size because he’s gotten so much stronger. Although, standing behind Chris for his scrimmage while wearing flats for the first time in that atmosphere, I realized I was dodging elbows which were at about eye-level.

Question: Player you are expecting to surprise everyone this year?

(@RaptorsHQ) – I’m sticking with my boy Sonny Weems, who apparently is already trying to dunk on everyone. Not saying he’ll get major minutes, but I do think he’ll see some time even on this deep roster.

(@stackmack) – Jarrett Jack has been a player I’ve watched since his days at Georgia Tech and I really admired the toughness he has played with over his NBA career. I think people may overlook the grit and intensity he can bring both to the floor and to practice each day, challenging the guards. In terms of athleticism or excitement, Weems is the guy who will be leaving jaws drop on the floor if/when he gets a chance to be in the open floor. The guy can get UP. I’d love to see a dunk off between he and DeMar during a practice at some point this season.

Question: Funniest guy based on your interactions?

(@RaptorsHQ) – Tough call – Jarrett Jack was clowning me for being a Duke fan but the funniest was probably Reggie Evans just because for a guy who’s supposed to be the hammer on this team, his voice sounds like Alvin from the Chipmunks.

(@stackmack) – Andrea. I know, you’re thinking I’m crazy, but sometimes he just shakes his head at the questions he’s asked as though we’re crazy and maybe we are, but Andrea’s reactions are priceless.

Question: Easiest player to interview?

(@RaptorsHQ) – Amir Johnson. He could have been my best friend from college that I hadn’t seen in a while. He actually walked over to me and asked if I was straight or if I needed anything!

(@stackmack) – We’re really very lucky with this squad. A group of easy, personable guys to deal with. While Jack and Jose Calderon are both very agreeable and open to answering questions and Chris is one of the easiest superstars you’ll ever hope to deal with, for me personally -if we’re talking new additions- I’d have to say DeMar because I’ve spoken with him at the draft, for a week in Vegas and then again over the summer for a couple of magazine pieces. While he’s a little shy at first, he’s a nice, normal 20 year-old who lives for the game and is as happy and excited to be living his dream as you’d expect.

Once again, I want to thank both Franchise and Holly for giving their takes on several topics. Make sure you check out their coverage of media day (HollyRaptorsHQ) and if you doing the twitter thing – get at them.

Match Ups – Toronto Raptors v/s Detroit Pistons

Keeping the focus in the East, next up – the Detroit Pistons. They may not be the same team that were known to destroy the Raptors on any given night, but after making a splash in the free agent pool, they remain a team to beat in the East. Breaking down her “new look” team is Natalie from Need4Sheed.

When Natalie is not spitting knowledge about all things Pistons over at Need4Sheed, she can be found tweeting @Need4Sheed_com or making caricatures of her favorite players.

The Detroit Pistons, what do I say about a team I have been following since I myself could dribble (on court and off)? How do you preview a team that has changed so much? A team that stayed pretty much the same for almost 5 seasons and in a matter of 12 months has managed to go from the eastern conference elite to a team of underachievers. One dismal (and that’s being kind) trade that set the wheels in motion to the team Detroit will put on court come late October.

I hate the term “new look” but for the Pistons that really does seem to apply. Here is a quick rundown of the Detroit low down.

  • Ben Gordon – Will he be coming off the bench for a little more than 10 million dollars a season?
  • Charlie Villanueva – A new exciting Twitterific addition that wow but isn’t known for his defense, something that Detroit prides themselves in.
  • Is Rip Hamilton’s future with the Pistons still up in the air?
  • No Need4Sheed now that he’s in Boston.
  • Antonio McDyess will surely be missed.
  • Will Rodney Stuckey truly breakout this season after having a lackluster season last year. I’ll give Stuck a bit of a pass on the considering he may have been affected by the AI drama.
  • Will Tayshaun Prince step up his game now the team needs him more than ever?
  • Can Austin Daye (Detroit’s first rounder) bulk up stomach as well as his game?
  • Can Will Buynum be a solid backup PG?
  • Chris Wilcox and Kwame Brown are the centers. No question, I’m just saying.
  • Will solid minutes help Jason Maxiell be more consistent?
  • Trade first time head coach Michael Curry for fist time head coach John Kuester.
  • First full season after the death of HOF owner Bill Davidson.
  • And lastly, Allen Iverson – Have fun in Memphis (Karma would have you coming off the bench for the Grizz)

Plenty of questions for a team that was so predictable for so many years. One thing I do know as a long time fan… I’m hoping it’s going to be fun to watch the unknown.

piston-raps

Last Season Record: 0-3
The Pistons struggled last year but it didn’t show against the Raptors as they swept them while playing shorthanded for a couple of the games. Chris Bosh has always struggled to put up decent stats when going up against Rasheed Wallace, but the first time the two teams met last season was different. Bosh put up 26-13 and the team still took a loss. Crazy eh? Well not really because on the offensive end players like Tayshaun Prince and Rip Hamilton have been known to carve up the Raptors with their athleticism and ball movement. The best chance Toronto had to get a win was in the final game in the series but they dropped it in overtime. The Pistons’ ability to get to the basket, move without the ball and convert on fast break opportunities always has the other team scrambling. Defensively sound, the Pistons have been a puzzle the Raptors have been trying to solve for several years.

Stacking Up

The Bigs: Chris Bosh finally has some breathing room. When the Pistons let Sheed walk, it left Bosh with no more excuses. He will be expected to perform well against this team. Detroit’s front line is looking the weakest it has in a while. New comer Charlie V – hardly heralded for his Defense, an aging Big Ben, a bust in Kwame Brown and journeyman Chris Wilcox. The Raptors should be able to take advantage of whatever combination is on the floor. The one intriguing piece on the Pistons is, Austin Daye. He had a great summer league showing and the Pistons are probably hoping he develops quickly so they can keep Kwame in street clothes down the end of the bench.
Edge: Raptors

The Wings: Tayshaun Prince has been a Raptor killer his entire career. He has always been able to roam freely on the defensive end as the team never had a weapon at the wing spot that he had to focus on. Enter: Hedo Turkoglu. Known for his offensive game, Hedo should keep Prince more on the perimeter, and that in turn means, it wont be so easy for him to leave his man and rotate down to double. Offensively, Tayshaun has improved him jump shot every year and has the ball handling, both skills that make him a tough cover for any SF in the league – let alone a weaker defender in Hedo. The Pistons also have the ability to go big at this spot, using newly acquired Charlie V, bruising Jason Maxiell, or ever their rookie DeJuan Summers – another one of Joe Dumars diamond in the rough picks. The Raptors have added size and players who can guard multiple spots but they will still struggle to keep pace against Detroit.
Edge: Pistons

The Guards: Rodney Stuckey + Richard Hamilton + Ben Gordon = A force to be reckoned with. Ben Gordon adds some serious offensive fire power to an already solid combination of guards in the Pistons back court. Jose (known to struggle when trying to guard athletic PG’s), has his work cut out for him and if Jay decides to put Jack on Stuckey, then Jose will be running around trying to keep up with RIP as he runs through multiple screens. Its a pick your poison situation for the Raptors who were struggling to keep up with last season’s version of the Pistons guard combos. The Raptors are going to need their guards to produce on the offensive end in order to expose the defensive weaknesses in players like Ben Gordon and Hamilton. Bottom line, this is a tough match up for the Raptors. The key will be to contain, because they wont be able to completely stop what the Pistons guards do during the course of the game.
Edge: Pistons

Predicted Record: 1-2 (Change is the name of the game but it will only tack on 1 W for the Raps here)

Incoming – Prom Dates

Action: Toronto Raptors trade Carlos Delfino and Roko Ukic to the Milwaukee Bucks in return for Amir Johnson and Sonny Weems
Reaction: 2 Prom Dates!!

The definition? A prom date is someone who you go all out for – The limo, the corsage, the tux and the hotel room. If she puts out you consider dating her for the summer before you head off to college and if she doesn’t, there is no love lost and you are left with a bunch of pictures from prom night. Putting it in basketball terms, Amir Johnson is your prom date, the 1 year remaining on his contract is the limo etc. If he develops the way you want, you have the option of signing him to a new contract for next year. If his potential doesn’t materialize (essentially he doesn’t put out) you can let him walk. and the only trace of him in Raptor red will remain in the Getty archives.

The Details: The Raptors had no use for Delfino once they brought in Marco Belinelli and Jarrett Jack. The money was there but the playing time had vanished prompting Bryan Colangelo to turn his attention to the SF/PF position. With limited options, it was looking like Pops Mensah Bonsu was going to take up that last roster spot, but evidently Colangelo had bigger plans. With this trade he managed to keep Delfino happy and reduce the logjam at the PG position by moving Roko, while bringing in more grit and rebounding. Roko still has potential but it was evident after his showing in summer league that Colangelo did not see him in the team’s plans.

amirAmir Johnson:
Joe Dumars may have lost his touch as of late, but the man has a great track record when it comes to finding hidden gems in the NBA draft. The last high school player picked before the rules changed, Amir is still young and has shown glimpses of what he can do over the past couple of seasons. He is a solid rebounder, good shot blocker and can flat out jump out the gym. The downside has to be the fouling and a lackadaisical vibe that he gives off. He looked solid in summer league playing with Brandon Jennings and should steal some of the minutes that were allotted to Reggie Evans.

sonnySonny Weems: Don’t know much about this kid, but I do know he gets passed around almost as much as Q Rich these days. (The Raptors are his 4th team since he was drafted in ’08). He is a bit player with minimum salary impact. Though he raises the hotness rating of the team, he will probably be spending most of his time warming the end of the bench.

Bonus – Winner of the 2008 NCAA Dunk Contest, maybe he could help DeMar DeRozan come up with dunks for All-Star Saturday 2010.

Looking Ahead: 9 new faces and only 3 players remain from the opening night roster from last season. Considering how last season unfolded, change was imminent. Bryan Colangelo has been bold with his moves but I am concerned about the team coming together with so many new parts. Another concern is the too many cooks syndrome, not always a negative, but in this case there may not be enough minutes in the game to keep everyone happy. Scary part? Colangelo may not be done yet…
