Raptors Media Day – Let the games begin…

(AP Photo/The Canadian Press, Frank Gunn)

The match up series will return to its regularly scheduled programming after this update on Media Day mayhem. The 9 new faces on the Raptors roster assured that a generally routine day would be full of optimism, quotes and a few jokes. I didn’t have the opportunity to attend (which I hope changes in the future), but wanted to bring you some news from the ACC. Since Holly (@stackmack from The Score) and Franchise (@RaptorsHQ from Raptors HQ) were both in attendance, I shot off some quick questions and they were kind enough to answer with their observations.

Question: First thing’s first… Did either of you get to try out any of the new eats at the ACC?

(@RaptorsHQ) – I didn’t try any of the eats but one of my co-writers who was there did. He had some of the doughnut things and one of the pizza pizza dogs. He said they were delicious ha ha!

(@stackmack) – Seeing how I’ve yet to eat in the media room during all of last season, I chose to pass on the food. Eating and working just don’t seem to mix for me, but everyone looked like they were enjoying themselves. Put me that close to the game and I’m focused on one thing only. Once I finally get home on game nights around 11:30 I’m famished!

Question: Which scrum was harder to get through, Andrea Bargnani or Hedo Turkoglu?

(@RaptorsHQ) – HEDOOOOOOOO…by a long shot. After 12 seconds I saw Sonny Weems walking solo so went to talk to him. Not just painfully slow, but guys like Hedo and Bosh EVERYONE talks to so you don’t really get anything new and interesting. Plus Andrea gets better with each season. This year he was even cracking a few jokes as opposed to two years ago when it was one word answers.

(@stackmack) – Andrea actually makes me laugh with some of his answers. You kind of get the feeling that he’s looking at us media types like, “Really? I just want to play basketball, please leave me alone”, so sometimes you get these answers that are half deadpan, half serious and they just crack me up. As I said in my media day round up, I will not be going to Mr. Turkoglu if I’m writing on deadline!

Question: Both of you had a chance to see DeMar in Vegas. All the talk as of late has been about him adding some bulk. How much of a change did you see?

(@RaptorsHQ) – Definitely looked like DeMar bulked up. Slam ran a post today about the magic “15 pounds bulk-up” and I’d say that was about right.

(@stackmack) – While the talk was largely on the weight that Bosh has gained, it was clear DeMar was not joking when he tweeted all summer about the long hours of training he had put in. He’s got some shoulder definition that simply wasn’t there before. Besides summer league, thinking back to his first pre-draft workout here in Toronto, he’s gained a lot of size and upper body strength since then. Great to see a young guy come in fit and ready to continue working. Speaking of the team as a whole, everyone looked ready to go.

Question: Bryan Colangelo sounded very excited when speaking about the upcoming season. What were some of the things that stood out for you when he addressed the media yesterday?

(@RaptorsHQ) – I could listen to the Legomaster all day. He just has a way with words and whether you agree with all of his moves or not, he does a great job of giving insight into things. I posted a 20 minute piece of the scrum with him yesterday on the site and I wish I had gotten the very beginning, just a fascinating listen. Anyways, for me, 3 main things stood out:

  • His level of respect for Jay Triano. BC was quoted as saying “I feel better about this training camp and the start and the preparation that’s gone on then I have in a long time…and I’ve been doing this for 14 previous seasons.” I think that speaks volumes about the coaching staff and unfortunately, Sam Mitchell.
  • The magic number 50. BC feels this team has the ability to win 50 games, and probably needs to do that to meet the expectations he’s set out, that is to say a second round playoff birth. That’s not to say that Colangelo thinks this team WILL win 50, but that’s the number it probably will take to get a fourth or fifth seed, and therefore a good shot at the second round thus avoiding the Clevelands, Bostons, and Orlandos.
  • How excited he is about seeing what this team can do. He admitted that his offseason moves probably aren’t going to solve every issue, but he does feel that he and his staff addressed a great number of last year’s problems and therefore he’s extremely excited about the potential of this new group of players.

(@stackmack) – That the team is a team. Jay may be a first year coach, but he is not alone in this. The team was “built” by Bryan and Jay together. How impressed Bryan is with the work ethic and preparation of the coaching staff as a whole this season. With nine new faces on the roster and two new assistant coaches in Marc Iavaroni and Alvin Williams, it’s really refreshing to hear that the staff is working just as hard as the players to turn over a new leaf this season.

Question: Bosh and Turkoglu will sit out the first part of camp. How much do you think this affects the timeline for the team to gel?

(@RaptorsHQ) – With the timelines we were given in regards to Bosh and Hedo, I don’t think this is that big of a deal. The off-court bonding is already taking place so while Bosh (and especially Hedo I think) might be a step slow to start, there’s still essentially a month to go before opening night so hopefully there will be lots of time to gel on-court. And in any event, I think it’s going to take a month or two of regular season before the real gelling happens anyways. It’s during that time that I hope everyone stays healthy.

(@stackmack) – It sounds like Chris is sitting out as a precaution after the team saw the trouble Jose Calderon had with the hamstring acting up throughout the season as a result of his coming back too soon. No need to rush either Chris or Hedo back, if it could risk or compromise their health later on down the road. Of course, in an ideal world you have your entire roster together, but life doesn’t work like that, so you roll with it and be thankful that your star player put in a hard summer of work in prep for a big season and that your biggest offseason acquisition will get to bond with him on the sidelines during training camp.

Question: Player surprisingly bigger than you remembered?

(@RaptorsHQ) – Amir Johnson. He talked to me about bulking up in the offseason and he definitely looks bigger than he did in Detroit.

(@stackmack) – DeMar is the guy I’ve got to go with for this for size because he’s gotten so much stronger. Although, standing behind Chris for his scrimmage while wearing flats for the first time in that atmosphere, I realized I was dodging elbows which were at about eye-level.

Question: Player you are expecting to surprise everyone this year?

(@RaptorsHQ) – I’m sticking with my boy Sonny Weems, who apparently is already trying to dunk on everyone. Not saying he’ll get major minutes, but I do think he’ll see some time even on this deep roster.

(@stackmack) – Jarrett Jack has been a player I’ve watched since his days at Georgia Tech and I really admired the toughness he has played with over his NBA career. I think people may overlook the grit and intensity he can bring both to the floor and to practice each day, challenging the guards. In terms of athleticism or excitement, Weems is the guy who will be leaving jaws drop on the floor if/when he gets a chance to be in the open floor. The guy can get UP. I’d love to see a dunk off between he and DeMar during a practice at some point this season.

Question: Funniest guy based on your interactions?

(@RaptorsHQ) – Tough call – Jarrett Jack was clowning me for being a Duke fan but the funniest was probably Reggie Evans just because for a guy who’s supposed to be the hammer on this team, his voice sounds like Alvin from the Chipmunks.

(@stackmack) – Andrea. I know, you’re thinking I’m crazy, but sometimes he just shakes his head at the questions he’s asked as though we’re crazy and maybe we are, but Andrea’s reactions are priceless.

Question: Easiest player to interview?

(@RaptorsHQ) – Amir Johnson. He could have been my best friend from college that I hadn’t seen in a while. He actually walked over to me and asked if I was straight or if I needed anything!

(@stackmack) – We’re really very lucky with this squad. A group of easy, personable guys to deal with. While Jack and Jose Calderon are both very agreeable and open to answering questions and Chris is one of the easiest superstars you’ll ever hope to deal with, for me personally -if we’re talking new additions- I’d have to say DeMar because I’ve spoken with him at the draft, for a week in Vegas and then again over the summer for a couple of magazine pieces. While he’s a little shy at first, he’s a nice, normal 20 year-old who lives for the game and is as happy and excited to be living his dream as you’d expect.

Once again, I want to thank both Franchise and Holly for giving their takes on several topics. Make sure you check out their coverage of media day (HollyRaptorsHQ) and if you doing the twitter thing – get at them.

Toronto Raptors : 15 Years in the making…

This upcoming season, the Toronto Raptors have plans to celebrate the teams 15th season in the NBA with tribute nights to honor an assortment of players who have contributed over the years. Focus is on players like Alvin Williams, Damon Stoudamire, Charles Oakley (check at the end of the post for complete list) but strategically missing is any kind of tribute to the man who brought the team into the spotlight – Vince Carter. This is a sticky situation for the team, no fan wants to honor a guy who bailed on the team but you can’t deny what he did for basketball north of the border and getting the team recognized by the media in the south.
As a long time season seat holder, I have been attending games since 1997. Previously, I have recapped the Raptors draft history and now its time to take a walk down memory lane…

Highlights…

  • Medic! – The team lost an NBA record number of player games due to injury.

2006-07 Season (Record: 47-35)

2007-08 Season (Record: 41-41)
Highlights…

  • Powerhouse – The Raptors had a year of experience under their belt but the new look Celtics were too much of a force. Celtics won the division with the Raptors a distant second.
  • Hack-a-TJ – In a game midway through the season in Atlanta, Al Horford inadvertently whacked at TJ Ford while he was mid-flight bringing him crashing to the ground and keeping him away from the game for 30+ games.
  • The Birth of a Rivalry – Dwight Howard made waves during the dunk contest and Raptor fans got to see first hand what the hype was all about. The Raptors met the Magic in the 1st round of the playoffs and hardly put up a fight losing the series in 5 games racking up the teams 4th first round exit.
  • Season Recap

2008-09 Season
Highlights…

  • Quick Fix – The PG controversy was short lived and TJ Ford was moved to Indiana bring in Jermaine O’Neal to play along Bosh. The experiment was a failure and JO’s stint in Toronto didn’t last through the end of the season.
  • Underachievers – Struggling to find consistency, a 132-93 loss to the Denver Nuggets essentially sealed the fate of Coach Sam Mitchell. He was fired two days later, and replaced on an interim basis by Jay Triano, the first Canadian-born head coach in NBA history.
  • Top 10 Plays of the Season

2009-10 Season
Highlights…

  • Extreme Makeover (Pt. 2) – Bryan Colangelo could not sit still after the way things went down in the previous season. He has pulled off a complete overhaul of the team leaving them barely recognizable. What is in store for the upcoming season is still unclear but I can’t wait to get this show started and fill in another year of Raptors history. This time around anything less than a 2nd round playoff appearance would be disappointing…

Raptor Rant – Show Me The Money

boshmoneyI will not rest until I have you holding a Coke, wearing your own shoe, playing a Sega game *featuring you*, while singing your own song in a new commercial, *starring you*, broadcast during the Superbowl, in a game that you are winning, and I will not sleep until that happens- Jerry Maguire
——————————————————————————–
We may be in the summer of ’09, but the speculation over the summer of ’10 has gone into overdrive. Recently, ESPN had its panelist turn their attention to next off-season when the likes of Lebron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh are set to enter the free agent market. Of the 52 panelist, 49 believe that Bosh will be relocating next summer. I beg to differ…

Chris Bosh will stay… but it will cost “Max Money”
He may be the forgotten man when talking about the class of ’03, but make no mistake he has always believed he belonged. With the way the CBA is structured, the Raptors maintain leverage in contract negotiations – $$ and length of contract. It was evident from the day he signed the 3 year deal, he was positioning himself to get the most money at the same time leaving the door open to go to a different team. He is still young and not at a point where he is chasing a ring, if anyone thinks money isn’t the driving factor in Bosh’s decision – they are delusional.

As a player who has had a history of knee problems, leaving $30 million on the table would be a huge risk. One bad break and he may never recover that money over the length of his career. The only way he would leave that cash is if he was guaranteed to make it up in endorsement dollars south of the border. With the economic climate unpredictable, and a significant amount of competition from other sports/teams, its highly unlikely that Bosh can be assured to have any major marketing money thrown his way. It doesn’t help that his style of play and position carry a low demand compared to Lebron, Tiger, Kobe, Jeter and Wade.

The option of leaving $30 million (approx.) on the table would only come into play if the team regresses to a point where he loses faith in the direction the team is going. If this is the case the likely destinations mentioned are New York and Miami. Both teams can give him a max contract (albeit less than what the Raptors can), but would be handcuffing the team by doing so.

New York has only 1 max contract available if projections of the luxury tax and salary cap for next season are on point. If that contract goes to Bosh, it means they can’t add Lebron or Wade to play alongside him. What is the lure to go to another struggling team that is essentially in a worse position than his current team? Miami could retain Wade and give Bosh a max contract but it would cripple the team in terms of depth.

Theoretically, it may sound like a good idea for Bosh to try to get in the spotlight, but realistically there are too many factors that make leaving the Raptors illogical at this point in his career.

Is he worth a Max Contract?
Bosh is going to get paid – one way or another. There are only a handful of superstars the rest of the teams have cornerstones. Chris Bosh may not be a 1st team All-NBA, but he is a franchise player who is the face of the Toronto Raptors. When a team is in a position to retain its franchise player, its highly unlikely that they pass on the opportunity.

Bryan Colangelo loosened his collar and went to work this off-season. One can make the case that these drastic changes were made to keep Bosh in Toronto. But, even if Bosh walks, the moves made this summer have left the team in a good position moving forward. The pressure is on Bosh to earn his contract as much as it is on anyone else in Toronto right now.

Raptor Rant: Quick Change

I turned to my twitter followers yesterday and asked them to tell me in 140 characters or less, what they think/expect from the new look Raptors.

@raptorshq: A better showing than last year, but without solid defenders and rebounders in the starting five, another first-round exit.
@stackmack: excitement. enthusiasm. passion. intensity. competition. work ethic. unknown adventure. dunking prowess. athleticism. camaraderie. change.
@basketballbuzz: Raps will finish 5 or 6 in the east with a record of 45-37. CB4 all-star again. D is still an issue they will allow over 100pts pts!
@norsktroll: Lets say I’m happy my team isn’t on the hook for $130 million for Hedo, Bargs and Jack :)
@dinonationblog: A break out year for CB4, improved 3 point shooting but a team that will still have challenges on the Boards and D. Playoff team 5th
@altraps: team will not make the playoffs (barely), it will be an injury plagued season, Bosh will be traded in the summer. Raps win 38 games.
@Liston: 6th place. Balanced scoring. Better offensive system. Still allowing easy looks. Bargs still not tough enough. CB4 shines – best yet
@davesenior: I expect lots of talk about transition buckets without seeing any, and even less defense then last year.

Consensus: Mostly Positive

********************************************************************************

Since this is my blog I figure I can use a lot more than 140 characters to tell it how I see it!

Going into the off-season it was evident that the product on the floor was not working and needed some repairs. As a man who hates to lose, Bryan Colangelo got to work. He pulled off this transformation in record time, leaving the Toronto Raptors looking they paid a visit to Joan Rivers’s Cosmetic surgeon and settled for the most expensive package – Result: completely unrecognizable!

On cue, I will now break down the Raptors post-surgery…

The Good: You go under the knife because you are unhappy with the way you look. Colangelo did just that with the Raptors, reworking every part of the team that wasn’t doing what it was supposed to. With 13 new faces on the roster from opening night last season, “new look” is a major understatement.

Weakness at the wing? Enter Hedo Turkoglu. Backup PG? Enter Jarrett Jack. Lack of toughness? Enter Reggie Evans. Need some veteran presence? Re-enter Rasho Nesterovic. No Bench? Enter players like Antoine Wright, Marco Belinelli and Amir Johnson.

It’s unclear if Colangelo went into this with a definitive plan but from the way it has gone down the new look Raptors should be vastly improved. With any cosmetic surgery, its all about “expectations”, and the real the result will only be visible once the bandages come off. If everything comes out as expected the team should be a shoo in for a post season appearance.

The Bad: Every type of cosmetic surgery has its healing time before the bandages come off. In the case of the Raptors, a major concern is how long will it take for this team to work out the kinks. With this level of change, I fear the adjustment period will go on longer than most would like. Every position on the team has been modified in some capacity. There are many steps the team will have to take before it the results translate into wins.

Rebounding was an issue in the past but until players settle into their roles and commit to working on crashing the boards, it will remain an issue. Team defense was non-existent, inject 10 new players and its bound to take time for them to get used to where each guy is usually on the floor, meaning there will still be issues with rotations and help defense. To top it off, all this change has to be managed by a rookie coach. He is respected by the few who were on the team last year, but building a relationship and understanding with the new faces is not going to happen overnight.

The fans will need to be patient. If the team tries to take off the bandages prematurely in order to get it rolling – there is a risk of breakdowns later in the season. Optimistic I may be, but a fair amount of growing pains are expected through the first part of the season.

The Ugly: There is always a risk when you opt for surgery and even the best surgeons can slip. Colangelo worked his scalpel to the best of his ability, but there is that chance that when the bandages come off that things don’t quite look like you had pictured them to. The newly constructed team is not immune to freak injuries, locker room issues and so forth. I have complete faith in Bryan Colangelo but one major injury could set this team back a year and a whole lot of $$

With the winds of change blowing through Raptorland, I found it fitting to share one of my favorite halftime shows. What Bryan Colangelo pulled off was almost as mind boggling as these two.

Raptor Rant: Speechless

Just as the chatter in Raptorland was dying down from the Amir Johnson / Sonny Weems acquisition, Doug Smith from the Toronto Star dropped this little tidbit. Fans in Toronto have been on a constant high this summer but if Bryan Colangelo does in fact manage to move Marcus Banks, I for one will be setting up shop in front of my newly created shrine…bcshrine

Words of praise from the believers

@gagangandhi I heard it happened, but there’s no footage. Can Bryan Colangelo really walk on water?

@leperdusier If Bryan Colangelo manages to get Matt Carroll (or a basketball) for Marcus Banks, I think we may have to declare another #BryanColangleoDay

@stackmack 9 new faces, 2 new coaches. 1st-year head coach Colangelo does not fear failure, he refuses to stand still w/ disappointment.

@dinonationblog If B.C moves Banks I have a new religion and it is Colangeloism and I suspect many Raps fans will convert.

@allancayenne Colangelo continues to work magic this off season. From now on I will call him Gandalf

@EliteGirlJen Is there anything Bryan Colangelo can’t do? I swear he once made wine from water…

@hoopsaddict If I were a GM and Colangelo was calling I wouldn’t pick up the phone

@the_tigercub If BC rally trades Marcus Banks, I’m gonna get drunk. Hammered. Beat me if you can.

@DeenLen I dreamt last night that Rob Babcock became NBA Commissioner & denied all BC trades, I woke up in the fetal position!
